Style Guides: dictionaries

  • The Macquarie Dictionary is the standard reference for Australian English. The 2530-page third edition is now available. Various versions including concise, pocket and thesaurus companion editions are also available. Check out macquariedictionary.com.au for more information. (ISBN: 0949757896)

  • The Penguin Dictionary for Writers and Editors by Bill Bryson looks at minefield of common spelling and grammatical problems and misunderstandings including foreign names and phrases (eg. Florence v Firenze), abbreviations (eg. PLO = Palestine Liberation Organisation), capitalisation (eg. SoHo in New York but Soho in London) and British/American differences (eg. racoon (UK) v raccoon (US)). Finding a copy can be hard but is worth the effort.
